Abstract

|
Globally, cervical cancer is the second most common malignancy in women and a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Until recently, the greatest strides in reducing cervical cancer mortality have occurred with the advent and implementation of screening programs. Many important advances have also taken place in the diagnosis and treatment of cervical cancer. For young women who preserve fertility, radical trachelectomy was introduced. With advancing laparoscopic technique, radical hysterectomy using laparoscopy became operative. In radiation therapy, image-guided brachytherapy and intensity-modulated radiation therapy were introduced to optimized therapeutic effect and to reduce complication. Currently, in advanced stage cervical cancer, cisplatin-based concurrent chemoradiation was regarded as
standard treatment. There is no consensus on optimal treatment modality in bulky IB2 and IIA tumor and metastatic, recurrent cancer.
